Classic Own Goals !!!

The pleasure of scoring a goal in football is great but having an own goal scored in your team's favour brings as much pleasure. The more precise, comical or unlucky the goal, the better!

Most in a game (individual)
To score one own goal could deemed an accident, to score two seems like carelessness but to score 3?
Jorge Nino of Democrata achieved this in a 1982 Brazilian league match. In an international, Italy's Sandro Salvatore put through his own goal twice in a 2-2 1970 friendly against Spain. So did Singapore's Lim Tong Hai who featured twice in the 1993 SEA Games against Myanmmar. Aston Villa's Chris Nicholl scored two own goals for Leicester in 1976. He also scored twice for Villa in the 2-2 draw.

Fastest
The fastest own goal on record is that of Torquay's Pat Kruse versus Cambridge United in 1977. It took just six seconds.

FA Cup Final
This century, only five players have scored an own goal in an FA Cup Final. Three of these players have scored for both sides:
- Bert Turner(Charlton), Charlton 1 Derby 4, 1946;
- Tommy Hutchison(Man City), Man City 1 Tottenham 1, 1981;
- Gary Mabutt(Tottenham), Tottenham 2 Coventry 3, 1987.
- Mabutt and Des Walker(Forest), Forest 1 Tottenham2, 1991 both share the ignominy of "scoring" FA Cup Final winners.

Shared
Leicester's Milburn and Froggatt are unique - they shared an own goal when Leicester lost to Chelsea 3-1 in 1954.

Goalkeeper
Goalkeepers' own goals have become a bit of a cause celébrè. Headed in, kicked in, in off - we've seen the lot. But for sheer gobsmackery, Leeds' Gary Sparke set the precedent with his overarm throw into his own goal against Liverpool in 1967.

Most in a game (team)
Few teams hae submitted to the embarassment of three own goals in a game; to do so in the first half of the match is a bit special. Holland's Den Haag presented Wolves with this gift in a 1971-72 UEFA Cup game. Back in 1952 and 1954, Sheffield Wednesday and Rochdale respectively set the standard - although it did take them 90 minutes.

Joint-Category winner -
farthest and most precise
For distance and deliberation, Lee Dixon's 1991 40-yarder at Highbury against Coventry has to be number one. Collecting a square ball unchallenged in right midfield, the Arsenal right-back checked, looked up and floated an immaculate curling lob over keeper David Seaman. Sheer perfection.

England Internationals
Post-war, seven players have scored an own goal while wearing the England shirt. Two of the unfortunates, Mike Pejic and Colin Todd, did it in the same 2-0 1974 Home International defeat against Scotland. The most recent own goal was scored by Tony Adams in the drawn 1988 friendly versus Holland.

Most Tragic
Infamously, Andreas Escobar's deflected own goal against the USA in the World Cup 94 resulted in him being shot dead by a "disgruntled countryman". Enough said.

Most comical
There are few better than Sandy Brown's for Liverpool in the 1969 derby game. Running towards his own goal completely unchallenged, his Pelé-esque leap and hover only succeeded in him heading the ball into the top left hand corner.
